Regarded by many as the original Sin City of Asia, Pattaya is a land of booze and carnal pleasures - a place where even as the night turns to day, the fun has just started. Famous for its so-called go-go bar clubs, it is located enticingly on the crescent shorelines of Thailand. Its relaxed and mischievous atmosphere has captured the imagination of many a traveler for over four decades now. However, it is not a destination made for pleasure-seekers only. In the right places, Pattaya can also provide wholesome activities that the entire family will enjoy. Even so, it is still at heart a wild, untamed stallion and is not likely to change into a docile pony anytime soon.
From a quaint and secluded fishing village in its early years, the city had risen to the lofty superstar status it now enjoys when it was discovered by American soldiers looking for relaxation during the Vietnam War in 1961. Since then, it has quickly transformed into the country's premier beach resort that attracts more than a 100,000 visitors every year. Featuring a wonderful climate, sandy coasts and a lovely landscape, it is a haven for swimmers, divers, boaters and fishing enthusiasts hungry for some adventure. The highlight, however, is taking a stroll down the notorious Walking Street wherein one can find a treasure trove of bars, clubs and strip joints one after another. Cabarets and strip shows included, it is neither for the underage nor for the conservative.
For the rated PG content, there are still lots and lots to see and do. There are numerous museums to be visited, especially the ironically-named Bottle Art Museum (there are no more bottles to be found there!), the illusionist Open Eyes Museum, and the aptly-unbelievable Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. The city also offers many exciting theme parks and much more wildlife zoos and botanical gardens. And though the city leans very heavily towards its entertainment sector, it still has a rich cultural heritage evident in sites like the Buddha Hill - featuring an exquisite sacred temple built in the memory of Confucius; and the Sanctuary of Truth - a beautiful wooden architectural masterpiece that is dedicated to the religious and philosophical truths. Truly, Pattaya is a place brimming with wonder and fun activities galore at nearly every turn.
