Barely registering a blip on Thailand's tourist scene radar, the riverside town of Mar Sariang has not much going for it. Walking down its quiet streets, one would highly unlikely bump into a fellow traveler. A secluded, almost deserted atmosphere pervades the area, like someone had pressed the "mute" button on the remote. That is, however, precisely the town's best attraction. Usually, Mae Sariang is used as an ideal travel base for exploring the northern destinations of the country. Tourists pass by the town to rest in its quaint accommodations and stock up on supplies in markets. Those who decide to stay on for a day or two are advised to head to the Salawin River for a nice boat ride. One can also visit the remote hill tribe villages to learn and experience their unique culture.
