Literally translated as the "dazzling island," picturesque Ko Lanta perched on the West Coast of Thailand's Krabi Province, gives justice to its name. An island paradise tucked away in the clear Andaman Sea, it boasts of soda-white beaches that stretch as far as the eyes can see, a stunning view of over 50 lovely islets lying enticingly just out of reach, and exquisite coral reefs set in a backdrop of lush rolling hills and umbrella-shaped trees.
Relatively secluded and spared from over-commercialization, it has long been a darling of the backpacker crowd and casual travelers seeking an exciting but relaxing vacation. It is not a slouch, however, when it comes to accommodations and facilities, featuring upscale resorts and restaurants that are quite ideal for all categories of tourists.
Though it presents a wonderful pack of postcard-worthy islands, most tourists usually converge on the Ko Lanta Yai (Big Lanta Island) and Ko Lanta Noi (Small Lanta Island), wherein most of the action happens. What is particularly distinctive about the place is that those who want some private and quiet time can find it just by going deep into the islands, away from the main towns. And then, once one gets the itch to party, the merriment of the beach is only a short distance away.
Being incredibly blessed with natural beauty, it takes pride in its twin peaks Hin Daeng and Hin Lipe where one can enjoy some of the top diving sites on the entire planet. The superb shores also provide great swimming, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking opportunities. In addition, one can't go wrong in arranging a tour to the heavenly islets lurking on the horizon. Not to be missed is a visit to the Ko Lanta National Marine Park, where one may catch an extremely rare glimpse of the elusive whale shark.

Laos is the least developed and most enigmatic of the three former French Indochinese states ... Read full Blog post
