Dan Sai Information

Dan Sai may be a quaint and subdued town most of the time, but for three days, the town wakes up and throws one of the rowdiest and liveliest festivals in Thailand. Located in the western Loei Province, it is definitely a unique and interesting destination, albeit one with a "best before" stamp on it. Apart from its loud celebrations, it also features some attractions that may pique one's interest, such as spectacular natural scenery, a relaxing atmosphere, and the chance to taste the best wines in the country. Visitors are therefore advised to rush headlong into the fun and excitement.

Said to have evolved from the spirit cults of the ancient Thai tribes, the boisterous Phi Ta Khon Festival is without a doubt the highlight of any visit to the town. Usually held in the month of June, it is a massive three-day celebration formed by two equally raucous events - the Phra Wet and the Bun Bang Fai. The Phra Wet is where monks relate the tale of the revered Buddha during his incarnation as the Prince Vessantara in the form of a long chant. Bun Bang Fai, on the other hand, is a manner of worshipping by means of fire: people shoot rockets toward the skies in the hope of being heard by the gods.

Adding to the mix is the town's lovely terrain that is home to the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park and the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, where visitors can experience some of the finest works of Mother Nature. Not the least in the itinerary is the renowned Chateau de Loei Winery, an establishment responsible for producing world-class wines that are Thailand's pride. One can satisfy the taste buds with a culinary journey induced by these intoxicating wonders.
