The Glossary
A much-overlooked resort town by many tourists shuttling to Bangkok or Phuket, Chumphon, found near the Gulf of Thailand, nonetheless is a spectacular destination in its own right. The capital of the Chumphon Province, it boasts of being blessed with incredible nature - miles of pristine coastlines, turquoise waters and picturesque islands lying invitingly just off the shores. As such, it presents a wonderful haven for swimming, diving and snorkeling opportunities. Tourists who want to escape from the popular, but crowded and noisy resorts can't go wrong at Chumphon, with its secluded and laid-back atmosphere.
Being a busy travel stop, the town offers good hotel accommodations and restaurants. Windsurfing facilities, and of course, guided trips to the islands are available to test the mettle of the adventurous. Those who want to explore the town are advised to visit the National Museum of Chumphon first. Historical artifacts narrate how the province came about and the lifestyle of people who originally inhabited the place. The town's natural beauty in the Khao Phang Forest Park, spanning over a square kilometer, provides a pocket of silence in this otherwise buzzing city. The unique Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi Temple provides the bizarre twist as the corpse of the famous monk Luang Pho Song, supposedly still growing nails and hair, is displayed for everyone to see.
