A small and dusty border town, Chong Mek has only its unique location going for it, in the so-called Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Thailand and those of neighboring Laos and Cambodia meet. Found in the Ubon Ratchathani Province, it is usually associated with being just a border crossing for tourists leaving the country or going off to other destinations. It is distinctive, however, as the sole crossing point that does not involve traversing the famous Mekong River. Tourists who do stop in the town can trek the massive Kheuan Sirinthon Reservoir, which is probably its only attraction worth visiting. It serves as a haven for some swimming and picnicking opportunities, coupled with a secluded, laid-back atmosphere.
