The Glossary
Millions of animals, including tree-climbing pythons and lions, form a lively circle of life at Tarangire National Park, which has one of the highest concentrations of elephants and wildlife, more than any other Tanzanian park, between August and October. If Serengeti has its wildebeest migration, Tarangire is reputed for its Elephant Migration or exodus of around 600 elephants between June and September.
The 1.6-mile Tarangire has distinct seasons offering different experiences: from a dry season calling for a safari with thousands of animals gathering at the Tarangire River, to a spring-like ambiance ideal for watching over 500 species of birds, newborn wildebeests and zebras dotting a panorama of savannah grasslands and large Baobab trees.
Except during the heavily-raining months of April and May, Tarangire's generally arid climate is a refuge for many migratory animals including lions, buffaloes, giraffes, and elands. Lake Ndutu attracts throngs of flamingos, while Grumeti River keeps the largest Nile crocodiles.
Safari lodges and campsites are common in the park, but tree houses are the most popular because these are perched high up on ages-old Baobab and Marula trees and are made of natural materials bedecked with African décor.
On the road trip to Tarangire from Arusha, there are the villages of the Maasai and Barabaig tribes, ideal sites for a cultural excursion. Hundreds of ancient rock paintings are also there to gaze upon in Kolo and Dodoma.
