Wildlife is served generously at Selous Game Reserve, known as a "Mega Camp" for occupying five per cent of Tanzania, making it one of the world's largest reserved areas. Selous is Tanzania's only game reserve, and since it's not a national park, many activities are permitted here apart from the usual camping and animal watching. The reserve's southern part is for hunting, while the north is for cultural immersion and for different kinds of safaris amid a landscape of varied vegetation and colorful African fauna.
Selous is situated in a remote location in southeastern Tanzania and so is mostly accessible only through light aircraft from Dar-as-Salaam, making visitors feel it's an undiscovered paradise. Nature viewing starts at the very moment the plane touches down on the reserve's unpaved landing path. Giraffes race beside the airstrip, while zebras parade across the runway.
Selous' northern reserve contributes a lot of meaning to the word "safari," which can be done walking past tribal villages, hiking over hills, flying over bushes, or boating across the rapid currents of the Rufiji River Delta, which attracts a fraction of the ten thousand elephants from neighboring Ruaha National Park. The elephants can be seen bathing or playing with their young at the lagoons, while rows of hippopotamuses sleep with their mouths wide open on the delta's muddy shores. As the boat reaches Stiggler's Gorge, large crocodiles can be seen yawning at the banks, while representatives of over 400 known species of birds fly by, with their vivid feathers appealing to the camera lens.
Elephants also wander in the hills and plains. Wild dogs and endangered black rhinos are also common. For the night, many backpackers stay in bonfire-lit camps consuming local dishes such as Mtori or cooked beef and bananas as well as Mchicha or vegetable stew with meat and fish.
