Northern Tajikistan Travel Guide
Tucked in between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is Northern Tajikistan, where visitors will find themselves surrounded by picturesque mountain landscapes. Remains of Tajikistan's history can be explored in this side of the country. The highlight of Northern Tajikistan is the Fan Mountains or the Fannsky Gory (in Russian), a popular trekking and climbing venue in Central Asia.
Adventurous travelers of the Fannsky Gory will have the chance to discover the beauty of its turquoise-colored lakes that are encircled by the Tajik shepherds' flocks. The challenge begins at the Artush walk, where a three-hour uphill hike to the Kulikalon Bowl awaits trekking enthusiasts. Hikers can camp by the Dushakha Lake, which is at the foot of the region's highest peak, Chimtarga. For day-long trips, the walk from Rashnar Poyon and Marguzor Lakes are ideal destinations.
A break away from the long hikes is the city's oldest remains, a 10th-century fortress that once housed Alexander the Great. Near the fort is a battle site where government troops waged war against a rebel Uzbek warlord. Visitors may get a better picture of the ancient fortress and of the war at the Museum of Archaeology and Fortifications.
