Dushanbe Travel Guide
After recovering from a chaotic civil war and from aggressive political demonstrations, Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe now enjoys peace and stability. Wounds from bullet battles are now covered, with the city's light-colored neoclassical buildings set against a gorgeous mountain view. Today, Dushanbe is an ideal destination for having a deeper knowledge on Tajikistan's culture and history. From national museums, historical monuments, to busy markets, the city gives visitors a handful in their itineraries.
The country's Persian past is preserved in the Writer's Union Building, where stone sculptures of writers from the Persian pantheon rest in a medieval-like cathedral. After experiencing some of Tajikistan's Persian roots, travelers may visit the Haji Yakoub mosque and medressa, one of the very few signs of Islamic identity in Dushanbe. Women tourists are only allowed to stay in the courtyard.
Should the eyes become tired of sight-seeing, the Ayni Opera & Ballet Theater offers unusual opera and classical music concerts. Seeing the theatre's gorgeous interior may make the visit even more memorable.
In contrast, modern entertainment is found at the Bactria Center, which screens foreign and local films on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Theater performers and enthusiasts may also want to check out the Lahuti Drama Theater, where Tajik plays are performed. For a closer look into Tajikistan's Soviet influences, Russian-based performances are shown at the Mayakovsky Drama Theatre.
