Some tourists who have been to Mataian may see it as nothing more than a pockmark in Taiwan's natural splendor. Located along the East Rift Valley, this patch of wetland is inhabited by the native Ami people. Mataian has long been neglected by the local government, until recently when they realized that these marshes teem with exotic flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the place.
Eventually, a large portion of the place is now called the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park. Most visitors flock here at specific times of the year. Come late June, the snaking Fudeng River is covered with a verdant blanket of lotus leaves and blossoms.
