Little Liuchiu Island Travel Guide
Located south of Kaohsiung City, Little Liuchiu Island is a burst of colors against the turquoise waters in southwest Taiwan. This five-kilometer atoll teems with a vibrant spectrum of coral gardens and exotic flora, which makes it a nature-lover's dream come true. Its immaculate shores and daunting caves make for an exhilarating daytrip for beach-combers and thrill-seekers alike, something they can never find in the big city.
The natural splendor of Little Liuchiu masks its blood-curdling past, but to history-junkies and daredevils, this only adds to the island's appeal. In 1636, Dutch soldiers swarmed the island (then called Lamey) and went on a killing spree against the aborigines. This bloodbath (more popularly known as the "Lamey Island Massacre") was the Europeans' retaliation for the natives' murder of the crews of two Dutch shipwrecks that landed in the island.
