The far-off Lanyu has long earned the moniker "Orchid Island," because of its gardens of vibrant tropic blossoms. Located 65 kilometers southeast of Taiwan, this arrowhead-shaped volcanic isle is a world apart from the Chinese-influenced mainland. The native Yami people are more Australasian than they are Taiwanese and they refer to Lanyu as Pongso no Tao ("island of the people"). Blessed with the country's most immaculate jungles and coral reefs, as well as the least-modernized settlements, this off-coast island stands out from the rest of Taiwan in more ways than one.
Backpackers are in for a challenge with the various treks in the island. A popular trail leads to the Tienchi ("heaven lake"), found in the crater of Mt. Tanshen. Shutterbugs flock to Lanyu for their unique rock formations that compose remarkable landscape photographs. Taiwanese tourists are enamored by these topographical wonders and they have given these creative names such as Longtou Yan ("dragon head rock") and Yunu Yan ("virgin rock").
