Literally meaning "golden gate," Kinmen (formerly Quemoy) is indeed a gilded threshold to some of Taiwan's prized historical attractions. Located 2 kilometers off mainland China, this quaint island teems with bitter remains of the civil war that Split the two aforementioned countries. Surprisingly, it is these wartime scars that draw people into visiting Kinmen. Today, the various forts and combat areas are transformed into tourist attractions where close-combat weapons such as switchblades are sold as prime souvenirs.
Finding the 63 wind lion god statues peppered all over Kinmen make for a truly exciting side-mission for thrill-seekers. An ideal kick-off to roaming around the island is war-themed museums such as the 8-2-3 War Artillery Museum (which has a modest collection of tanks and by going to the fighter planes) and the Huchingtou War Museum (with its wide array of photographs of the military officials back in the war).
