Taking pride on its age-old glassmaking industry, Taiwan's "Silicon Valley" Hsinchu City is a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and bold shapes. Walking around this northwestern metropolis is a treat in itself with the variety of historical and cultural landmarks, curio shops in the ever-busy market streets, and the workshops that have been producing high-quality glass pieces since the Japanese colonial era. Tourists in Hsinchu also enjoy the town's refreshing and breezy climate and mouth-watering local food.
An ideal time to visit is during the International Glass Art Festival, held in the Craft Glass Museum. The fair honors Hsinchu's most renowned craft with the hundreds of fantasy-themed masterpieces of local glass artisans. Symposiums led by international craftsmen are organized for those who want a hand on this meticulous yet highly-rewarding art. Art enthusiasts flock to the Glass Art Street, which displays surreal glass sculptures in the outdoors for a month.
Those who have had their fill of the spectra of colors and forms can head out to the towering East Gate, arguably the town's prime landmark. Nearby is the City God Temple which boasts of vibrant murals, which date back to the 18th century. Shutterbugs will find delight in taking souvenir photos of the baroque-themed Hsinchu Railway Station, which looks like a slice of Europe in Taiwan.
