Eastern Taiwan Travel Guide
A spine of towering mountains and a vast waterfront characterize Taiwan's eastern region. Its two lengthy arteries can take the wandering traveler into an interesting string of tourist attractions in just one road trip, a treat to those who enjoy long drives and stunning sights. An ideal kick-off is the daunting Taroko Gorge, a nature-lover's haven. With vast array of land and water activities such as river-scaling and mountain hikes, this popular ravine gives tourists no time for boredom.
South of the region is the busy Hualien, which makes a good springboard to the two prime thoroughfares, Highways 11 and 9, with each offering a collection of different sights. Those who go to the former will be treated to the tranquil seaside vista of the Pacific Ocean, as well as the culture-steeped aboriginal villages that line the coast. Continuing on to Taitung will permit the bold to reach the cast-off islands of Lanyu (Orchid Island) and Lutao Hsiang (Green Island), two of the country's immaculate and less-crowded territories.
Those who choose Highway 9, on the other hand, are gifted with the cool, bucolic atmosphere and Taiwan's spine of mountain ranges. Hot springs are quite common in this area, especially in Rueisui. The quaint settlement is also a fine choice for whitewater rafting. Those who prefer to learn about Taiwan's diverse wildlife can head to Mataian, whose vast marshes teem with endemic flora and fauna. In June, the winding Fudeng River is smothered with lotus flowers.
