Danshui makes for an ideal weekend escape, with its well-preserved colonial architecture, panoramas of seemingly infinite waters, and lip-smacking seafood cuisine. Located in Taiwan's northern region, this charming riverside town has shaded lanes, colorful markets, and a breathtaking sunset view in the waterfront which stirs a romantic appeal that tourists will find hard to resist.
Arguably the highlight to a visit to Danshui is the impressive brick red complex built by the Dutch in the 17th century, which locals today now call Hongmao Castle (hongmao means "red hair" in reference to the Dutch). The Japanese invasion has also left its mark on the town, notably the Martyr's Shrine. Originally built to worship the Emperor Meiji, the temple was renamed after the war in honor of those who died defying Imperial Japan. Those in search for a unique gastronomic experience can head out to the Old Street, a riverside walkway along Danshui River, where lines of food stalls serve the local street cuisine. Exceptional must-tries are the iron egg (black and leathery hard-boiled eggs) and the hearty fish ball soup.
