Originally built in 1629, the Hongmao Castle, as the locals called it, is a Spanish-made fortress. It was named as such by the locals in reference to the Dutch, who later captured the castle, since it meant "red hair" or "red head". Its original name is Fort San Domingo. Its purpose was to position the Spanish to rule over the area.
Thirteen years after it was constructed, Hongmao Castle was captured by the Dutch and drove away the Spanish. By 1867, the castle was intensly renovated after the British leased it. They constructed the British Consulate here as well. It was only in 1980 when the government was able to claim the historical site.
