Chiayi is a prime thoroughfare to Taiwan's most popular conservation facility, the Alishan Scenic Area. With its streets lined with raucous markets and steamy food stalls, Chiayi makes for a satisfying settling place to and from the famous nature park. An ideal time to visit would be during the Chiayi International Band Festival, one of the country's most anticipated events.
The town features museums with impressive collections of artifacts and majestic century old temples. A gallery that children will enjoy is the Stones Data Museum, which displays a plethora of stones and fossils of different sizes, origins, and characteristics. Remains of prehistoric animals and even the primeval men are also exhibited. Another impressive exhibit is that of the Chenghuang Temple, with a wide array of highly-detailed images of deities and demons.
The town offers a feast of Taiwanese cuisine and street food. Notable among them is the Turkey rice, which is basically a bowl of rice tossed with Turkey strips and a savory sauce.
