A small island bursting with verdant forests, pristine shores, and an idyllic atmosphere throughout the year, Beigan is almost untouched by modernity. Bordering the People's Republic of China (mainland China) and the Republic of China (Taiwan), this isle is only a slice of the bigger beach haven that is the Matsu Islands. Beigan teems with well-preserved Fujian architecture, as seen in the lines of traditional pointy-tipped Chinese houses and lavish spires.
Most tourists flock to the island because of its sprawling beach Benli, the island's widest. With its broad shore of cream-colored sand, beach-goers are sure to find a spot to lie out and relax. Bird-watchers trickle to Beigan from time to time, as it is home to a vast array of endemic species of terns, such as the Chinese crested, the Black-napped, and the Roseate.
Visiting the local villages is an ideal way to learn of the centuries-old culture in Beigan. Located north of the island, the quaint settlements in Cinbi and Ciaozai exude that Old China charm. The towns are entirely set in stone, from the houses to the streets so as to protect them from the harsh winds that occasionally ruffle the place. Some of these granite homes serve as guesthouses where tired tourists can find lodging for the night.
