From a 19th-century bastion of an Egyptian army, Khartoum shortly progressed as a center of trade and commerce and as a slave market. Today, it rides the currents of modernity as the country's second largest city and administrative hub.
Built at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers, Khartoum has a colonial downtown where the Nile Street, the Great Mosque of Mesjid al-Kabir, and the Souk Arabi are located. This area starting from the Nile Street to the Presidential Palace is one of the most beautiful facets of Khartoum.
Aside from the old side of the city, one can also wander around the modern side of Khartoum starting from the city's own Tiananmen Square, a home to a Chinese Hall and to several skyscrapers. A walk at the square's tree-lined promenade can also be a worthwhile diversion especially on a late afternoon.
From the square, tourists can reach the National Museum of Sudan, renowned for its stunning artifacts that rival the ancient Egyptian exhibits of the famous British Museum. Another museum, Khalifa's House, showcases some interesting relics from the battles of Khartoum to the old British newspapers published in Sudan.
Other than Souq Arabi, another fascinating market in Khartoum is Souq Omdurman, one of Africa's largest open markets. Here, visitors can buy all sorts of goodies such as handicrafts and rugs, which are being offered at a lesser the price without sacrificing the products' quality and authenticity.
