Composed of the regions Sennar, Kassala, Al Qadarif and Blue Nile, Eastern Sudan is the portal to reach Port Sudan, the country's seaport that dabbles as a thriving diving spot. Although the people of Eastern Sudan suffered marginalization in the recent years, tourism in the area did not falter. One of the region's most notable sights is Kassala, a popular gateway to the famous lovebirds of Sudan.
Aside from its cool climate and beautiful scenery, the laidback character of Kassala makes it even more captivating for visitors. The region's small market is worthy for a peek. Here, local Sudanese women sell grapefruits, guavas and mangoes fresh from the fruit orchards, alongside some unique local handicrafts that are generally of good quality.
Village-hopping around Eastern Sudan is also a great way to learn more about the different cultures in the region. Kassala, for instance, has a mixed population of Beja and Halanga tribes, which are known for their long waistcoats and swords. There are also the nomadic Shukriya Arabs that live in Al-Qadarif. The group is famous for their camel herding skills.
Among the most interesting groups, however, are the Rashaida that live in the suburbs of Eastern Sudan. The nomadic tribe is related to the Bedouin of Saudi Arabia and is known for their goatskin tents and silver trinkets being sold in Kassala's open market. Those wishing to walk down to the oldest part of the region can visit the old Moorish houses, mosques, and tomb of Sayid Hassan in Kassala.
Hikers might likewise enjoy the environment surrounding Eastern Sudan. The mountain Jebel Totil could be put on the list of possible routes, alongside the temples on the slopes of Al Qadarif's mountain ranges.
