After cooling off in the beguiling beaches of the East Coast and South Coast, trekking to The Hill Country opens up the gate to the bucolic landscape of Kandy and to the dense jungle of the Sinharaj Forest Reserve and eventually to the verdant rolling hills of Adam's Peak.
Visitors can meander around the genteel town of Kandy which is all prim and proper with the Temple of the Tooth and the well-known Botanical Garden set at its center. A good way to kill time after strolling around the lush countryside is to stay at the man-made Kandy Lake built by Sri Wickrama Rajasinha. Before heading to another town of the Hill Country, visitors should see the grand parade of dancers at the Kandy Esala Perahera, a lavish celebration wherein local Sri Lankan dancers are in their best garbs while herds of elephants are decked with all sorts of ornaments.
From Kandy, visitors can proceed to the undulating trails of Nuwara Eliya, also known as the "City of Lights," a beguiling route that offers beautiful scenery. Just as in the case of the beautiful Ella, Nuwara Eliya's tea plantations are among the producers of the best Ceylon tea in Sri Lanka. Visitors can have an opportunity to see the many tea factories where they can watch how tea is produced soon after the tea leaves are harvested.
The next item in the itinerary after the tea country treks would be a strenuous hike to the Horton Plains National Park and World End, a peek to the famous Adam's Peak, and perhaps a quick jaunt to the endemic wildlife of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After the tough hikes and trails, it's worthwhile to rummage through the gems shops found in the "Gem City" of Ratnapura where visitors can buy from the wide-array of semi-precious gems (cat's eye, topaz, moonstone, amethyst), have them cut and packed as a gift to a loved one back home.
