The spit of Nilaveli coast is the sister shore of Trincomalee's in Sri Lanka, one of the popular destinations of the beachcombing tourists from different corners of the globe. This scenario was interrupted when a tsunami smashed on the coastal town in 2004 which led to the sudden decline of the number of holiday-makers coming in to this spot of heaven.
Much of Nilaveli has been resurrected from the damage caused by the tsunami. At present, visitors are once again being lured by the miles of white sand rimmed by shallow blue-green waters of Nilaveli that has captured the imagination of tourists for years. In their rendezvous with Nilaveli, they can also hire a boat to dive and snorkel at the Pigeon Island, home to thousands of wild pigeons merrily basking under the sun.
Nilaveli proves to that it still remains a crowd-drawer, an ideal place for rest and relaxation, and a piece of paradise where the sun, sea and sky come beautifully together.
