Among the destinations in Sri Lanka, the remote town of Kataragama is undoubtedly the most popular pilgrimage sites among Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims in the country for it is believed to be the domain of the benevolent god Skanda. Surrounded by legends and tales, the town has a rustic appeal with its leafy street corners and the rapids of Menik Ganga or "Gem River".
