Eastern Sri Lanka Travel Guide
Visitors coming to The East of Sri Lanka after a firsthand experience of the impressive temple complexes of the Ancient Cities are sure to have a total respite. Coming to the East may not be breathtaking but visitors get a peculiar feeling seeing the sun, sea and sky merging at the horizon.
The bucolic landscape of Ampara, the verdant corridor of the East to its craggy hills and pastures, provides a scenic counterpoint to the beaches of Batticaloa and Trincomalee which are beyond the land's narrow strip of sand. The two underdeveloped beaches are marked not by five star hotels and resorts but with dunes and a few shabby beach huts.
However, the main attraction of the East Coast is the Arugam Bay. Flocked by tourists from April to December, the bay is among the top ten surfing destinations in the world, rubbing shoulders with big names such as Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and the Coast of Hawaii. Apart from the thrill of wading in the colossal waves, the village offers a worthwhile and delightful sight despite the fact that palm-thatched cabanas and cabins are all they have by way of accommodations.
The East is also a good starting point to explore the smaller beaches of Nilaweli and Uppuveli, the twin shore hugging sister of Trincomalee. The long stretches of Passekudah and Kalkudah, a windsurfing and water skiing haven in Sri Lanka's East Coast. Apart from the beaches, the East also serves as a gateway to the century old cave complex of Kudumbigala, south of Arugam Bay, and the Lahugala National Park which is home to the elephants.
After all the water sports adventure and day treks to the nearby terrains, visitors should buy some island souvenirs at Arugam Bay where seashells accessories, colorful native mats, baskets and bags and other knick-knacks are sold. They are specially made by the locals and produced by an association of fishermen's wives living along the coastal area.
