A fusion of a suburban area that offers high-end real estate and a "Golden Mile" of pristine water fronts, the newly-created city of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is relatively young compared to the ancient settlements in Sri Lanka.
Mount Lavinia has a very colorful history-a love story, to be particular. On Sir Thomas Maitland's welcome party, a mestizo girl named Lovina was asked to perform, and the governor-general immediately fell in love with her. Their relationship, however, was cut short as the governor-general was transferred to Malta in 1811. Maitland named his estate Mount Lavinia House, as a reminder of his love. He died unmarried, and nothing else was heard of from the girl. Today, Mount Lavinia is teeming with stunning beaches that mesmerize a large number of tourists yearly.
Dehiwala, on the other hand, has undergone an economic boom in the recent past. It is still growing and expanding with the numerous properties being developed and the commercial establishments sprouting in the area. A notable landmark in Dehiwala is the National Zoological Gardens, one of the largest of its kind in Asia. The conservation permits visitors to get close to the animals. Feeding and even riding are allowed, under the supervision of authorized guides. There are also numerous gardens that feature a wide variety of flowers and medicinal herbs. If the visitors are lucky, they may see butterflies fluttering about.
