If the West Coast sprawls with immaculate beaches, Ampara on the other hand, brims with goodwill due to the number of workers for non-government organization trying to make a difference in this remote town. It once served as a haven of hunters during the British rule.
Formerly known as Ambaragama and then Ambara, Ampara is inhabited by Sinhala minority and serves as a refuge of intrepid tourists who crave for some off-the-beaten path adventure. Visitors can now see clearly the scenic paddy fields, known as the "Granary of Sri Lanka," in the countryside after it was devastated by tons of sand brought by the tsunami in 2004.
