Aluthgama, Bentota and Induruwa Travel Guide
Situated in the West Coast, Aluthgama, Bentota & Induruwa display unspoilt beaches and lively market, at a comfortable distance from the other major tourist hot-spots of Sri Lanka. Visitors can meander around Aluthgama on the way to the Temple of Aluthgama which is reputedly the largest in Sri Lanka, which stands 52 meters high, overlooking the skyline of the West Coast.
Bentota's Galapatha Viharaya is also worth the visiting. It has five clusters of temples forming a huge monastic complex which houses the sacred tooth relic of Sri Lankan Royalty Arahat, Maha Kashyapa monolithic carvings in stone which dates back to the Kandyan Period, and the Queen's Bathe House.
Bird watchers and those who enjoy ecology-related activities can linger around Induruwa. There are many flora and fauna to see amid the water lagoons and the rapids of the Maadu River. Boat safaris, along the Bentota River, should also be included in the itinerary when visiting Bentota. The whole length of the river is dotted with specs of land fringed with tangled mangrove swamps where cormorants and kingfishers thrive along with the giant crocodiles.
A long cruise upriver can be capped off with a taste of the freshest oysters or grilled prawns and with curd (fermented buffalo white milk) with generous dollops of Kitul palm honey dubbed as the "best dessert" in Sri Lanka.
