Udo Island Travel Guide
Udo Island manages to maintain a relaxed, provincial atmosphere despite tourist crowds visiting regularly. The island attracts thousands with its romantic and isolated coastal setting. Although it is only 17 kilometers in circumference, this islet offers a number of sights enough to fill a day-long trip.
The island's main attraction is the Hongjodangoe Haebin Beach, Korea's only white-coral beach. Visitors riding on bikes may navigate through the corals' blinding white color. Another seaside highlight is the local haenyeo divers. These old women are locally admired for their strength as they dive in wetsuits using only flippers, nets, and knives to collect shellfish, sea cucumbers, octopus, and other edible sea life. At such old age they are able to hold their breaths for hours without using any oxygen tanks.
Visitors can explore the island in three fun ways. One way is through navigating the narrow roads through a bike. The more relaxed may just take tourist buses while the youth might enjoy taking a scooter or a quad bike.
