Jeollanam-do Travel Guide
Travelers seeking a complete break from the noise and pollution of the city life might want to plan a trip to Jeollanam-do. Alternatively known as South Jeolla, this unindustrialized province in South Korea thrives on rice farming and fishing. From water and land national parks to spectacular seaside views, Jeollanam-do oozes with natural elements.
The province redefines natural enlightenment in the Unjusa Temple, which is found in Hwasun-gun. According to legend, the temple used to have 1000 Buddhas and 1000 pagodas for the sake of balancing the peninsula's lack of hills. Now, only 23 pagodas and 100 Buddhas remain. These numbers, however, are the largest count among Korean temples.
Jeollanam-do also takes pride of its artistic and ceramic traditions. The contemporary art festival, Gwangju Biennale, is held every two years in the city of Gwangju. A color explosion of exhibits, music, lectures, and experimental art dominate Gwangju during this much-awaited event. Artists and art appreciators who cannot catch the festival can instead visit the Gwangju Art Museum, which hosts avant-garde exhibits.
Visitors seeking the more traditional part of the art spectrum can check out the Damyang Bamboo Crafts Museum. Ancient and modern bamboo products rest here, along with a display of international bamboo instruments.
