Haeinsa Travel Guide
The home to Tripitaka Koreana's 81,340 woodblock scriptures is the Haeinsa Temple, located in Gyeongsangbuk-do. "Tripitaka" literally means three baskets, representing the three Buddhist divisions: the Sutra or scriptures, the Vinaya or laws, and the Abhidarma or treatises. Tourists will need to go through four large buildings to see the whole Buddhist library.
Another set of Buddhist scriptures found in the temple are 2835 blocks from the Goryeo period. Aside from scriptures, these blocks also have literary words and an Avatamsaka Sutra illustration.
The Haeinsa Temple in itself could be a feast for the eyes as it naturally blends with the surrounding coniferous forest. During the rainy season, couples usually enjoy strolling around the temple's forest. For a deeper insight into the temple's history, there is a museum displaying its treasures and contemporary art as tribute to the local deity, Haeinsa.
Although exploring the temple only takes a day, overnight stays are also available in the area.
