Gyeongju Travel Guide
Gyeongju is home to a number of tombs, rock carvings, temples, and palace ruins from Gyeongsangbuk-do's past as the Shilla Dynasty's capital. Glimpses of a once united Korea can be seen in the town's Korean history museum, the Gyeongju National Museum. Aside from history, the museum also has an art hall featuring Buddhist works. Found outside the museum's main gallery is the Emille Bell, a large bell that can produce sound that can be heard from three kilometers away even when struck lightly.
Eastern Gyeongju is home to a variety of picturesque venues. Among those worthy of mention is the Bulguksa temple, which rests on a series of stone terraces surrounded by iris flower gardens and twisted pines. Another feast for the eyes is offered at the Seokguram Grotto, where the image of the Sakamuni Buddha can be seen with the icons of lesser deities and over three dozen guardians.
Hikers can also reinvigorate themselves spiritually and physically in Southern Gyeongju Mountain or Namsan. The mountain has hundreds of paths running along streams. During the hike, visitors might as well find themselves visiting the temples and monasteries along the way.
