Bird Island Travel Guide
Ornithology is the best recipe of Bird Island, a Mecca for beholding a kaleidoscope of furry wonders scooping for fish in the frigid Atlantic sea, or gliding into the sky like miniature warplanes ready for a blast. Separated from the western end of South Georgia by Bird Sound, Bird Island is an overseas British colony, also claimed by Argentina as a branch of the Tierra del Fuego province. The Island was discovered in 1775 by James Cook, who christened the island thus "on account of the vast numbers [of birds] that were upon it."
Twenty seven of South Georgia's 31 breeding animals are found in the Island. Almost every inch of the site's three-mile stretch is occupied by thousands of Antarctic fur seals, Macaroni penguins, albatross, giant petrels and South Georgia pipit.
Even if these creatures will allow you to take a few photos, people can mingle with the winged friends only aboard a boat. Bird Island is not like Manhattan Central Park wherein anyone can just pat a pigeon on the nape or throw in crumbs on a mound of doves. The Island has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest; hence, no landings are permissible without consent from the Jordan Cove station of the British Antarctic Survey whose resident biologists study the ecology of the island and the population of the island's seabirds and seals.
An important research finding attributed to the Island is the average flight span of an albatross. In 2008, the British Antarctic Survey celebrated the golden anniversary of their research on Bird Island.
