Isimangaliso Wetland Park Travel Guide
Tucked away in the lush forests of north central Tutuila is Mt. Alava, whose rough terrain makes it one of Samoa's splendid and popular mountains. The giant only offers a fantastic view up its summit, but that is not the only attraction there for you. The side-trip to the old cable car terminal is also pretty interesting.
The journey to Mt. Alava's peak begins in Fagasa Pass, located west of Pago Pago. The six-mile trail is relatively easy, and broad enough for an all-terrain vehicle. Though the path is surrounded by thick vegetation, there are a few amazing sights to catch on the way to the top, like Fagasa Bay. A metal staircase leads all the way to the summit, and to a breathtaking view of Pago Pago Bay and the town below, as well as the famous Rainmaker Mountain. There is also a cement fale (native house) where trekkers can eat and rest before heading back down. Nearby are the remains of the old cable car terminal that go from the peak all the way down to town. Originally built to transport equipment to and from the transmission tower, the line was finally wound up during the 80's when two jets collided with the cars, killing the pilots.
