Sedimentary rock formations from the volcanic eruptions of the Pre-Cambrian era lead to the formation of Drakensberg Mountains about 200 million years ago. Continuous erosion makes the mountains reduce in size and the plateaus to recede.
Tourism in the area is developing, with a variety of resorts and lodges being built on the slopes. Most of the South African parts of the mountains are designated wilderness areas or game reserves. In 2000, the range was named a World Heritage Site.
