Singapore River bore witness to probably the greatest chapter in Singapore's history - the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles by its banks. It is certainly of no surprise that it stands as a place of great historical significance because it was where the country's fate was altered. The site of a small fishing village, it was opened as a free trading port that oversaw Singapore's change from a backwater location into one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Today, it is not fishing boats, but skyscrapers and entertainment centers that line the banks of the river. In fact, the bulk of Singapore's nightlife scene is found along the streets of Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, and Robertson Quay by the riverside.
Aside from the bright lights, however, Singapore River is also one of the few places in the country where historical heritages can be found. Probably a highlight of a visit to Singapore River is the Merlion Park by The South banks, which houses Singapore's famous national symbol: the Merlion. For the uninitiated, a Merlion is a mythical creature that is a cross between a lion and a fish. One can also see a pint-sized version of the original nearby, dubbed the "Merlion Cub."
The Cavenagh Bridge is a must-see too, it being Singapore's oldest and only suspension bridge to date. In addition, there is the iconic Raffles Statue that pays homage to the great founder of the country - and it is said to stand exactly where Sir Raffles had landed so many years ago.
