Sentosa is the premier island resort getaway in Singapore, which was originally a fishing village unthinkingly named Pulau Blakang Mati - or "The Island of the Dead." Sentosa at present is a far cry from that appellation, as it bustles with life as a major tourist destination of the country, drawing thousands of visitors every year. It's not perfect, of course, and it has had a history of being called a tourist trap over the years. In fact, even the Singaporeans themselves like to quip that the island's name actually stands for "So Expensive and Nothing TO See Actually," a not so subtle jab at its many overpriced attractions.
Probably the best and simplest thing to do in Sentosa is to avoid the expensive amenities and head directly to its two-kilometer-long beach and then indulge in fun beach-related activities such as swimming, diving, and a host of others. For an off-the-beaten-trail experience, it is advisable to arrange a trip to the nearby southern islands of Kusu, St. Johns, Sisters, and Pulau Hantu, which are still relatively untouched by tourist development - a welcome sight in a land full of the "hustle and bustle" of modern life. A good piece of news is that these islets are likely to stay that way in the future.
