The end of the world can be literally found in Savai'i, Samoa's largest island, which also offers a bigger tableau of exotic sights than its smaller sister, Upolu. Apart from being the largest island in Polynesia outside Hawaii and New Zealand, Savai'i is generally uninhabited, thereby showcasing more unspoiled, unfamiliar environment like black-sand beaches, sculptural cliffs, and centuries-old lava fields.
Only one road circumnavigates the whole island, which is adorned with contrasting coastlines of white-sand and volcanic black beaches dotted with large fales (thatched houses) and colonial churches. It is not unusual for the locals to say "Talofa" or "Hello," and strike a conversation with a palangi (foreigner) in mixed Samoan and English. Buses are quite an experience as they tend to get filled quickly and if they are not on the roof, tourists find themselves sitting on a local's lap!
Many say Savai'i is the "real" Samoa, or Samoa outside the western sphere of influence. Instead of playing the national sports, rugby and cricket, the Savai'ians amuse themselves and their guests with watching coconuts shoot into the sky at a blowhole like Alofaaga; walking in between ancient banyan trees through a thin and wobbly canopy bridge; and hiking through trails behind old plantations to swim at the deep pool beneath Afu Aau Falls. In addition, some travelers have also found standing atop the Pulemelei Mound or surfing the wave called "Plum Pudding" just as enjoyable.
On the western-most is the Falealupo Peninsula, which is only a few hundred miles from the international dateline—the edge of the map. Rainforests spring with wildlife not yet tracked by scientists. Archaeological sites like star mounds, fortifications, and ancient platforms are just as eerie as deep, centuries-old volcanic craters like those in Mount Matavanu and Saleaula, a moon-like lava field etched with around 500 hollows.
