Mount Matavanu Crater Travel Guide
Mt. Matavanu's recent eruptions are to blame for the wide lava fields that blanket some parts of the northern Savai'i. Today, the sleeping volcano is one of Samoa's off-beat tourist attractions. Mt. Matavanu's notoriety only adds up to its value to tourists and volcanologists. Nestled in the northeast jungles of the island, the place beckons visitors to stare down the mount's cavernous crater in awe.
For experienced hikers and avid trekkers, getting to Mt. Matavanu is a great adventure on its own, providing real thrill and even wild excitement. It is an eight-kilometer walk from Paia, through verdant country fields, to the desolate old lava paths. Taking a 4WD vehicle is also advisable. The blue fale (thatched-roof house) implies that one is already near Matavanu, and one can consult the local caretaker to know where the trail to the crater begins.
The people are friendly to travelers and will extend help in showing directions. As the trail can be rugged with overgrown vegetation, travelers should keep an eye on the path. A misstep spells a fall or a disaster. They are advised to take note of the handmade signs along the path leading to the crater. Though the road is extremely rough, reaching the top is rewarding: lush jungles rushing to the ocean provide an awesome view. It's a place that inspires the beholder to think that nothing separates him at last from the endless horizon.
