Malate Church is home to the image of the Virgin Mary known as the Nuestra Señora de Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies). This was also used by the British as their base of operations during their attack on Intramuros which ultimately led to them occupying the Philippines for two years. The statue of the Virgin Mary in her role as the Our Lady of Remedies that currently stands at the altar of the Malate Church was brought to the Philippines from Spain in 1624. Like many of the churches in the country, Malate Church was also badly damaged during the Second World War and was restored after that.
