Guimaras Information

/ Asia / Philippines / Visayas / Guimaras / Information

Despite Guimaras' sheer "smallness," it has a complete formula of a sea, sun and sky to rival the Boracay and to entice the beachcombing crowd of all ages to visit its spectacles. If not the beach, visitors are in for a sweet treat as Guimaras offers what is considered as the sweetest mangoes in the world—the prime crop of the province. Smacked in the middle of the Visayas, Guimaras is flanked by the two big islands of Negros and Panay and can be reached via plane or the RORO (roll on roll off) ferry that travels to and fro the nearby Iloilo.

Among the most visited beaches in the province are the white sand beaches of Puerto del Mar, Roca Encantada, Alubihod and Guisi. More off-the-beaten choices are the beaches of Guiwad in Dolores, Mabalud, Igcawayan and Cabano. Island-hopping opportunities also abound, with the prominence of Guimaras' off-shore islets such as Taklong Island in La Paz, Tiniguiban Islet in Igang, Isla Nauay, and Turtle Island and Tres Marias( three Marias)—the last two being the most famous.

To those who are in for a more challenging jaunt, they can conquer the many caves in the area which include the Higante Cave in Jordan, whose stalagmite and stalactite formations imbue the cave with an eerie atmosphere; the long and narrow cavern of Biri in Poblacion which can only be accessed by crawling through a small opening of the cave walls; and the Suli Cave in Boro Boro which can be explored by passing through different sizes of holes.

Providing a spiritual touch to the island is the Trappish Monastery by the Cistersians of the Strict Observance, the only one of its kind in the Philippines. To afford the panoramic view of its neighboring, more prosperous province Iloilo, visitors can tread the path to the Balaan Bukid Shrine, located at the top of a mountain or trek the Guisi Lighthouse in Dolores for a more romantic appeal.

Like any other province in the Philippines, Guimaras also knows how to have fun by celebrating unique festivals that celebrate its gifts such as the "Manggahan Sa Guimaras Festival" (mango festival)m "Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras" (a Lenten production by the people of Jordan patterned after Oberammergau in Germany) and the Mountain Bike Festival organized by the Governor's Cup Mountain Bike and Downhill Competitions with the aim of promoting bicycling as a sport and a way to boosts the reputation of the province as an eco-tourism destination.
