El Nido Travel Guide
El Nido is a nest of nature's bounty, with its palm-fringed white beaches, lush neighboring isles, and exotic flora and fauna. This rustic coastal municipality features a myriad of dynamic activities and tours and is an ideal springboard to the Bacuit Archipelago, one of Palawan's prime attractions. Located in the northern tip of the mainland, El Nido is an accessible retreat for domestic and foreign guests. Visitors of this piece of paradise range from long-time backpackers who aim to conquer the resident mountains to regular tourists who merely want a tropical escape from the urban chaos.
The name El Nido was derived from the Spanish phrase "the nest," as swiftlet nests are found aplenty in the area's karst cliffs. Sold for thousands of dollars a kilo, these bird homes are the main ingredient to the gourmet nido soup.
Offering a laid-back atmosphere from its basic to mid-range buildings and establishments, the main town proper called Poblacion serves as the gateway to Bacuit Bay and the rest of the nearby islets. The larger land masses like Cadlao, Miniloc, and Lagen are dotted with beach resorts and luxurious amenities. Those who fancy a more secluded setting can go to the smaller and farther isles such as Tapiutan, Caverna, and Emmit. Many go to these islands to acquire sun-kissed skin while thrill-seekers bask in the waters to wind-surf, dive, or simple swim. An arduous day in El Nido is best rewarded by witnessing the marvelous tropical sunset changing color from bright orange to indigo.
