The Glossary
"An adventure of epic proportions" may sound like an ordinary catchphrase to pique tourists' attention but Donsol lives up to this superlative. This quaint town used to be an ordinary coastal settlement until 1998 when the news broke that a large group of whale sharks (locally called buntanding) was spotted swimming in its neighboring waters. Since then, point-and-shoot photographers, marine biologists, and regular tourists swarm to Donsol to have a glimpse of the world's largest fish, making this town in Sorsogon one of the Philippines' top destinations.
Whale-watching is the primetime show and the 12-meter long deep-sea giants are the stars. Massive as they may be, these sharks are really friendly and would allow people to get near them. Peak season is from December to May, when the groups of these colossal creatures flock to the waters to feed on plankton and small fishes. Tourists should never attempt to touch or use flash photography on the buntandings, as they can be easily frightened. Also found in Donsol are the manta rays (pagi), the most benevolent of their kind.
Come nightfall, the snaking, mangrove-lined Donsol River is set aglow by the fireflies. Tourists are enamored by these luminary wisps as they dance around the twigs and branches and converge to smother the trees whole in their flickering light.
