The Glossary
The rough, challenging terrain of Simbu Province is a high-risk mountaineer's dream come true, blessed with thick forests, remote valleys, untamed waters, and best of all, little commercial establishments. The county is a constant gateway to hikers who want to conquer the several mounts that can be found close to the area. Located in Papua New Guinea's mainland, the Simbu (pronounced and often spelled "Chimbu") Province got its name when the pioneer patrol officers gave steel weapons to the indigenous tribesmen, and the latter replied "sipuuuu", meaning "thank you" in the local dialect. Progress is very slow in Simbu, but the locals make up for it through human outsourcing, owing to the province's dense population and inaccessibility.
Probably the main attraction of Simbu is Mt. Wilhelm, the highest peak in the country, which offers a fantastic view of both north and south Papua New Guinea. The various mountain villages, the highest-elevated being Kegsugl, are always worth a visit. Most natives offer warm welcomes to visitors, who intend to learn of their culture. Just up Kegsugl is the incredible Pindaunde Lake, from where the panorama can be awe-inspiring. Most trekkers would usually spend the night around the area before pushing through the summit. The summit's view is impressive and reaching it is indeed a big accomplishment.
Majority of the relevant happenings in the Province however occur in Kundiawa, the provincial capital. The small town is nestled in Simbu's high mountains and offers basic amenities such as lodging, banks, and a few marketplaces. In the outskirts near Chuave are the Keu caves that used to be burial chambers of natives. Tourists who want to enter the caves are advised to consult with local guides first as some may consider those places tambu (forbidden, taboo).
