Born from the ashes, Kokopo started developing after nearby Rabaul was smothered by the simultaneous eruptions of volcanoes Tavurvur and Vulcan. Today, the city is one of the Papua New Guinea's most promising, with its abundant vegetation and almost-untouched shores. Though some may consider the place an unconventional summer getaway, surely spending a day in a pristine beach without the hassles of other tourists and pesky peddlers can't be so bad, can it?

Located northeast of the New Britain Island, Kokopo does have the basic establishments such as accommodations, government offices, and banks. Though it may not have the big-time amenities, one of the few sights in town is its museum, which is always an ideal place to start exploring foreign ground.

The East New Britain Historical and Cultural Center houses numerous significant artifacts from World War II, such as photographs and relics. Yet another historic venue is Queen Emma's House, the previous residence of Kokopo queen Emma Coe Forsayth from Samoa who made a trading empire out of plantations, trade stores and ships. After a history class, one can take a dip in the Kokopo Waterfront, where boats can be hired to explore nearby isles. One may perchance the local boatmen gathered under the shades and playing music. Shopping is a good way to end the vacation, the Kokopo Market offers native trinkets and organic products to tourists who want to bring along a piece of Eden with them.
