Kokoda Trail Travel Guide
A dream come true for avid trekkers, the Kokoda Trail snakes through the mountainous regions and thick jungles of the southeastern peninsula of Papua New Guinea's Mainland, slithering through the outskirts of Port Moresby from the Owen Stanley Range travelers begin at any point of the trail and proceed trekking.
The trail is historically significant since it witnessed numerous battles during World War II. American and Australian forces battled against the Japanese who planned of capturing Port Moresby to secure a stronghold in the then-called New Guinea Island. The most formidable adversary of them all, however, was the terrain itself for its lack of basic conveniences such as toilets and lodgings and its harsh environment. After the war, Australians have made a pilgrimage to the same track in tribute to their soldiers. It has since attracted a number of walkers from all over the world with each passing year. Today, locals compete to finish the track in the annual Challenge Race.
Those who intend to do this arduous walk need to secure their permits in either the Kokoda or the Port Moresby branch of the Kokoda Trail Authority. The fastest time to finish the track clocked in at a record of 16 hours 34 minutes.
