A large, virgin island that features mountainous terrain, thick forest, and pristine coasts: an adventurer's idea of heaven? Bougainville is that and much more: a tropical paradise that takes pride of its stunning topography, vibrant coastal communities and historical wreck sites that everything seems at once natural and deliberate. Located in the eastern central of Papua New Guinea, the island was involved in a number of chaotic uprisings, some of which have left marks on the landscape and on the people's psyche. But Bougainville has dusted itself off and is ready to face the 21st century with its welter of promising attractions.
Dormant volcanoes and peaks located at the heart of Bougainville beckon backpackers to roam and conquer them. Accessible via Wakunai is Mt. Balbi, Bouganville's highest summit that offers a great view of nearby peaks, especially the active volcano Mt. Bagana to the east. Tourists can visit the numerous covert caves and lagoons that dot the island, which they can have all to themselves. After a tiring trek, one can take a dip on the Kangu Beach south of the island, where the small islets of the Solomon mini archipelago can be seen.
A notable remembrance of the infamous World War II is Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plane wreckage, which can still be found in the jungle off the road between Panguna and Buin. Located south along the mountainside, Buin houses several relics left by the War, as it once served as a Japanese base. Up north is Loloho, which is near the historic Arawa Bay. The port gives tourists a glimpse of Arawa with its rows of abandoned buildings that speak of a prosperous past.
