Situated of the northwestern coast of Panama in the bay of Chiriqui is the isolated archipelago of Bocas del Toro. The pristine and largely untouched glory of Bocas del Toro has been a well-kept secret of Panama for some time and has only recently become frequented by international travelers. Bocas del Toro is an outdoor enthusiast paradise with opportunities for fishing, diving, boating, and snorkeling around every turn.
The expansive sandy beaches and unspoiled coral reefs are one of a kind and once you set foot on this majestic place you will never want to leave. The indigenous tribes scattered around Bocas del Torro in small remote villages combined with the strong Jamaican population give the island a unique Caribbean feel. Everything is free from the hustle and bustle of life and the relaxed atmosphere is contagious!
For many travelers the attraction to Bocas del Toro is a combination of the area's relative obscurity and the subsequent ability to travel there inexpensively. Although the tourism industry has picked up the pace a bit in more recent years the area pales in comparison to other Central American destinations of its type. Visitors can enjoy all the spoils of an island getaway without the hefty price tags they may see traveling elsewhere. Lodging, restaurants and activities are available and sufficient, but not in force.
Most visitors to Bocas del Toro are sun bathers at heart. The fishing, boating, diving and snorkeling offered in the area is most popular. Many travelers enjoy a catamaran trip along the archipelago with stops on some of the areas more secluded beaches for snorkeling and swimming. Hiking through these untouched outskirt islands is a favorite activity of many tourists as well. A guided hike yields images of exotic vegetation and interesting animal inhabitants.
Scuba diving is by far the biggest draw in Bocas del Toro because of the areas diverse waters and low cost excursions. Divers are surprised to find shipwrecks, dozens of examples of coral, hundreds of species of fish and abundant kelp forests just off the coast of Bocas del Torro. In fact, many divers spend days going out on the water to continuously explore the waters around the archipelago.
