The Glossary
A generous mix of impressive mountain ranges, scenic trekking routes, and diverse wildlife, Nepal's Western Terai region is however one of the least-visited parts of the country. Relatively undeveloped, it does not see a deluge of tourists, just like in Kathmandu or Lumbini. Despite this, its untamed beauty is an attraction for some, catering mostly nature-lovers. It must be advised, though, that Western Terai is a Maoist heartland, so one should first check the safety and feasibility of a visit.
Ironically, Western Terai is actually located in the middle part of the country, in spite of its name. The undisputed star of its tourist scene is the city of Pokhara, which brims with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Known for its trekking routes winding through the mountains of the Annapurna Range, Pokhara completes the visit to Nepal. Its unimpeded views of the Himalayan Mountains, most especially the perfect pyramid shape of the Machhapuchhare Peak, makes it an ideal place to behold the world's tallest mountains.
Another highlight to a trip is the Royal Bardia National Park, considered to be the largest and most unspoiled of its kind in the region. Found by the Karnali River, it has a unique landscape that features a mix of savannah, grassland, and riverine forest. A former agricultural area, it was declared as a nature reserve in 1976, and is now a sanctuary for rare wildlife such as Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles, swamp deer, Indian rhinoceros, Gangetic dolphins, and some of the last surviving herds of wild elephants. Bird-lovers will not be disappointed as the park is home to more than 200 bird species.
A fitting cultural touch is the idyllic hill town of Tansen that once held the distinction of being the capital of the powerful Magar Kingdom. Famed for its year-round good weather conditions, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a nod to its rich heritage. Its highlight is the 64-room Tansen Durbar that served as the Magar's seat of power. The Bhagwati Temple, on the other hand, commemorates the Nepalese victory over the British at Butwal while the blood-stained Bhairabsthan Temple is dedicated to the god of destruction.
